About Score
Nathan chose to compose a piece for a clip from the British TV show The Last King. This composition demonstrate his expertise in musical scoring and orchestration across various styles and genres, showcasing his versatile musical talents.
The choice of a dark tone and genre in this piece mirrors Harry Gregson-Williams' work in period films such as The Last Duel, Prince of Persia, and Kingdom of Heaven. The goal was to convey a similar mood and aesthetic, drawing inspiration from Gregson-Williams' use of harmony and unique sound characteristics over conventional melodies to create a rich atmosphere.
Employing a blend of orchestral and experimental instruments such as strings, brass, woodwinds, synthesisers, and piano helped to create a distinctive soundscape. The structure of the piece was influenced by the narrative progression in 'The Last Duel', with the initial bars focusing on a calm and flowing atmosphere before transitioning into a more intense and dramatic phase.
Techniques such as playing chords on a C Phrygian scale and gradually introducing additional instruments were used to evoke a historical and ominous ambiance. The composition crescendos into a darker tone and increases tension, culminating in a powerful finale characterised by repetitive rhythms, striking piano staccatos, drums, sustained strings, choirs, and brass instruments. While the piece effectively reflects Gregson-Williams' style, enhancing the ending with a real orchestra could further elevate its impact.
